Adoption Information

The Parrot Rehabilitation Society is all about finding new homes for birds in need.

Although we desperately want to see our "homeless" birds placed in permanent accommodations, we have to be picky. Most of our birds come from homes that could no longer keep them, or from situations that were bad for their physical or mental health. In order to prevent that from recurring, PRS has set up strict criteria for bird adoption. These criteria require attendance of certain seminars and meetings. Therefore, those wishing to adopt must live in Southern California. The requirements for adoption are as follows:

1. An adopter must be a PRS member in good standing, with dues ($20/year) current.

2. Before adoption, three (3) PRS lecture series in the Education Seminars must be completed (see Calendar for schedule):

a. Basic Care and Nutrition
b. Taming, Training, and Grooming
c. Emergency Care of Ill or Injured Birds

3. A confidential bird adoption application must be filled out and on file with PRS. This application must be approved by at least 2 members of the Board of Directors before the bird may be adopted.

4. A potential adopter must allow a member of the Board of Directors to visit their home before the adoption can be finalized.

5. The adopter must pay PRS a pre-set adoption fee set by the board of directors before adoption.

6. While financial status is not an issue in adoption, gainful employment is required for adoption to assure PRS that the adopted bird can be taken to an avian veterinarian for basic health care.

7. After adoption, the adopter must allow a home visit from a member of the Board of Directors 2-3 months after adoption is complete.

8. The adopter must understand that an Adoption Contract will be entered into. This is a legal and binding document and will be acted upon if the rules of adoption are not adhered to.

NOTE: Adoptions are limited to two (2) birds per year per household.

NOTE: Members interested in adopting a bird should speak with the Director of Adoptions. E-mail or call PRS to see what birds are available for adoption. Many of our adoptable birds are available at our monthly meetings.

***PRS reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone.***
