What We Do The PARROT REHABILITATION SOCIETY (PRS) has three main goals:
Parrot Rehabilitation Parrot Rehabilitation. PRS take in parrots that have been abused, who are no longer wanted, or can no longer be cared for. These birds are given a check-up by our avian veterinarian. After their check-up, these birds are placed in a temporary foster home with our member volunteers. Our foster home members address the bird's medical, nutritional, and behavioral needs. The birds are treated for any illness they might have and they are slowly weaned onto a proper diet of pellets, vegetables, fruits, grains, pastas, beans, etc. Gentle behavior modification is used to curb any behavioral problems the parrot may have such as unnecessary screaming, biting, fear of humans, feather picking, over-grooming or self mutilation. Once the bird's health and behavioral issues are tended to, they are placed on our list of adoptable birds. The final goal is to place the parrot into a permanent home with one of our members who has gone through our parrot care education series. Owner Education. PRS trains current and potential parrot owners on how to be the best companion to their feathered pets. Our educational seminars address issues such as parrot behavior, taming, training, grooming, nutrition, and emergency care. Community Awareness. PRS promotes public awareness about birds and bird responsible ownership. We travel to schools, pet stores, and community centers educating the public about the unique nature of parrots. We encourage the public to research the different species of bird before buying or adopting a bird as a pet. |
